ABSTRACT

We report on our experience with 26 cases of thyroglossal ducts cyst in children and adolescents. Fifteen were males and eleven were females, with age ranging from one to a 16 years old. Twenty-twoo patients had cysts and four had fistula, four of these patients had a recurrence and two submitted to simple cystectomy and fistula removal. We recommend excision when the mass is discovered, because thyroglossal cysts retain a connection to the foramen cecum, infection by oral bacteria can occur. Recurrence following excision of an infected or previously drained thuroglossal duct cyst is 1 1/2 times that of and intact cyst.
